Need For Speed Shift

shift1smToday we'll talk about a game very expected by the fans of the series: Need For Speed Shift.

EA comes back on our PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 with a new formula. The extreme tuning and every modification has been raplaced: now we talk about a "traditional" race game, like GT or Project Gotham Racing.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR LIFE? I DRIVE!

shift2sm As you probably thought, you'll have to proceed in your career by winning races, that are initially quite simple, and that will become very harder little by little, until you'll get to the World Tour. Obviously when you win a race, you'll earn money that you can spend in the few modification at your desposition(like a powerful engine, gears and so on..). You'll get this money also by your own Level(that is increased by your driving style) and obviously by your winning a race. Once that you have reached a new level, you would buy new wheels, livreys, etc... with which you can make your car smarter. Besides the level, you will be rewarded with medals, that you can obtain by using certain cars or by driving in a certain way.

There are also stars that are essential for unlocking new races and groups of races: you can obtain them at the end of every race, but thery aren't linked to your win, but rather to the features of you driving style.

Concerning the elaboration, as i said, you'll need money to buy many kinds of modifications that allow us to make our car more powerful. Then it's possible to set up the structure of your car parts, in order to modify the power of the brakes, the control and so on. This all is for underline the extreme realism that is very clear in this game.

AGAINST THE WALL

If a car accident happens to you, you'll see your car damaged. At the first look it seems very cool and well done, but also in the most damaging accidents, your car will never be damaged in a deep way. At least you would see scratches or bruises almost everywhere, but nothing more. The same is for the inner parts of the car: functional problems will never happen, except from the steering.

But the driving model is in general very well done even if in some case it's impossible to control your car. Concerning the AI, we see that it's a quite hard game. Initially the opponents aren't very aggressive, but going on they'll become more obstreperous and they will make you in some trouble; all this contribute in the creation of a very satisfying challenge.

NUMBERS

Concerning the available autos, we can talk about 60 cars. You'll find Audi, BMW, Pagani, Lamborghini, Mazda VolksWagen and many more. You can buy them at the dealer and they can be utilised in the career mode.

Talking about the cars you can drive in multiplayer, they are unlockable during the single player session and they are about 20.

There are also about 37 maps and among them, some are real and some are not.

Obviously the models of the cars are extremely detailed.

TALKING ABOUT TECHNIQUE

shift4smConcerning the graphics, well, there is a little to say: as i said, cars are very detailed as well as the maps(both urban ones and non-urban ones), the internal point of view is fantastic(the pilot is tossed around perfectly by the physics rules and, in case of accident, the sight is darkened), HDR and blur effects are well structured and above all the second one gives a perfect speed feeling. The external point of view will make you see the graphic detail of the world but it's less realistic as well as the one on the hood.

Engines's sound is in general amazing: every sound, from the engine's rumble to the turbo's whistle are perfectly reproduced. Concerning the soundtrack, it's definetely out of NFS standards: we were accustomed to listen to famous rappers and songs that used to fit perfectly in this atmosphere, but in this game there are no insired music. Thumb down for the soundtrack, then!

GOING THROUGHT

shift5sm

For getting it over, we're in front of a race game definetely very well done in a technical point of view. Realism is extreme and the experience is amusing. The problem is that in reality it's not Need For Speed: the fans of the series will be catched unprepared by seeing the difference between this chapter and the other ones. If you are RACE fans, you MUST buy this game. If you are NEED FOR SPEED's fans, well this game is NOT for you.

THE REPORT

GRAPHICS 10 Fearfully realistic and well done, other than not heavy for your PC.

SOUND 7,5 Definitely under the standards, but saves itself thanks to cars sounds(that for a racing game are more important than the soundtrack).

LENGHT 9 A lot of cool unlockable maps, tons of car to drive, everything enriched buy a multiplayer mode that isn't very original.

TOTAL 8,8
